Lesson Planning

Watch the following video from the GROWS Planning Session. This video is an excellent example of collaborative lesson planning.

Research has shown that "Collaborative planning ensures that programs are coherent and curricula are integrated" (Campbell & Wilson, 2001). The following strategies are important when designing effective lesson plans for Family Literacy programs:

Use books for children. - You can use any leveled reader when designing lessons, just be sure that the book fits both the adult and child's reading level. For the purposes of this training, we'll be using "Buzz Said the Bee," by Wendy Cheyette Lewison.
Be sure to determine the readability of text.
Don't forget to include vocabulary lists. - Focus words
Consider using sample planning forms by component.
